A few words about Songerize and industrial varnishing

February 15th, 2008

I have a new favorite destination on the Web, and it is Songerize. The concept is pretty simple; you enter a song title and/or artist name, and the search engine seeks out publicly available mp3s that match that criteria. It’s essentially the mp3 equivalent of a Google “I’m feeling lucky” search. It’s amazing for those times when you just HAVE to listen to a certain song RIGHT NOW (as happened to me last night with the 1985 Eddie Murphy/Rick James calling card “Party All the Time“) and don’t have it already in your library somewhere.

Thanks to this beautiful resource, I have been thankfully re-united with two of my favorite songs ever, both of which I thought I might never hear again. These two songs, as you might have guessed, are T. Valentine’s “Hello Lucille, Are You a Lesbian” and The Answer’s timeless classic “GE’s Got To Investigate Silicones.” “Hello Lucille…” is probably the best song ever written about the possibility of Lucille being a lesbian, and “GE’s Got To…” is the only nine-minute pop song I know of that contains references to baby bottle nipples AND industrial varnishing.

I used to have these two songs on a mix tape I compiled from broadcasts of Irwin Chusid’s old “Incorrect Music” show on WFMU. I gave away that mix tape, foolishly not making a copy for myself (Nick Snow, wherever you are, hope you’re still enjoying the tape, and continued congratulations on your wedding!). But miracles do happen, kids, and thanks to frickin’ Songerize, these two songs are here for both you and me to enjoy. That sound you hear as these songs play is the sound of your life changing forever.

Koven appreciation, music

New music. What.

February 14th, 2008

It’s time to turn and face the strange, folks, as you may have noticed some changes lately here at kovenjsmith dot com. Over the coming week(s), there will be more changes as I gradually bring new features (including, finally, a working events listing, for those of you who who are down with, um, events). For now, though, please dig the new “audio” section I’ve added to the site, which includes, at last, all four movements of my most recent collaboration with Ellen Cornfield, Fault Lines. I think the audio players actually work and everything! Yes! If this is not proof that I care for you, I do not know what is. I really don’t.

Love,

Koven

Sweet Jeebus, the new Deerhoof record is good. How is it that I’ve gone this long without realizing that they’re one of my favorite bands? The mind reels.
