Description
Drinking About Museums was (and depending on where you live, maybe still is!) a network of informal meetups for museum professionals. It began as a good idea (namely, that museum people should not have to wait for a conference to talk shop) and a name that was easy to Google. At its height, there were #DrinkingAboutMuseums meetups in over 100 cities worldwide.
Drinking About Museums started as a meetup that Kate Livingston and I organized in Denver, CO in 2011 or so. I came up with the name while watching Doctor Who. The meetup went pretty well, but it was when the great Ed Rodley asked if he could borrow the name for a meetup he had already been hosting that the thing took off. It became a great way to meet other people working in the museum field who were often fighting the same battles you were.
In the early days of the pandemic, a few of us pulled together a global #DrinkingAboutMuseums event: a rolling chain of Zoom meetups that started in Australia (proving it’s always happy hour somewhere) and moved westward across time zones. Was it a little silly? Probably. But it was that, or bake more sourdough.
